"The design of this necklace is symbolic of my culture," says Ila Suleyman who calls it Jumai, the Mamprusi name usually given to boys born on a Friday. From northern Ghana, the Mamprusi people are predominantly rice and cattle farmers who use cow hide to create various items including jewelry and accessories. For this masculine necklace, Suleyman selects a pendant carved from bull horn featuring twin perforations to center multiple strands of brown leather. The necklace fastens with a toggle crafted from recycled plastic.
